Once your ductless AC system is installed, you may have a few questions on your mind. Many of them are likely to relate to how to set your thermostat.
Before we go any further, remember this: you probably have more than one zone, since you have multiple indoor air handling units. This allows you to set different temperatures for different parts of your home.
When setting a thermostat on a ductless AC system, you should first think about what’s best for you. For example, if you’re always hot, you’ll want to set your thermostat a bit lower. Conversely, if you tend to get cold easily, even during the summer months, you can set it on the higher end.
Here are some tips to guide you:
- The Energy Star program suggests that you set your ductless AC thermostat to 78 degrees during the summer months. That sounds hot, but these units are extremely efficient. This is enough to maintain a cool environment, all while keeping your energy bill as low as possible.[i]
- Program your thermostat: You don’t have to keep your thermostat on the same setting throughout the day. Maybe you like your home to be a bit cooler while you’re sleeping at night. And maybe you want to make it a bit warmer when you’re at work, as to not run up your energy bill. With a programmable thermostat, you can set a schedule that suits your needs.
- Consider the location of the indoor units: When choosing a location, you’ll typically do so based on what looks best in the room. However, there’s something else to consider: the distance from the unit to the floor. Since heat rises, higher mounted units will read warmer than what you actually feel. So, it’ll make the room cooler. Adjust your thermostat accordingly, tweaking it until you find the perfect temperature.
- Know your zones: With more than one zone, you’re able to select a different temperature for different parts of your home. For instance, you can make your bedroom cool at night, while turning up the thermostat in your living area. Know your zones, including which thermostat manages which rooms.
There is no right or wrong way to set a ductless AC thermostat, but these tips should help you make more informed decisions. After a few days of trial and error, you’ll end up with the setting that’s perfect for you and your family.
