Ductless mini-split systems are growing in popularity among Boston homeowners, thanks in large part to their energy efficiency, ease of installation, and affordable pricing.
While these systems don’t typically require as much maintenance as central air, there are still steps you must take throughout the year to keep it in good working condition:

Here are several types of maintenance required by every ductless mini-split system:
1. Clean the Outside Unit
Not only is this one of the easiest things you can do, but it’s one of the best in regards to keeping your system in good working condition.[i]
In short, your goal is to clear the unit of any dust or debris that’s accumulated, such as the result of inclement weather.
The longer you go between cleanings, the greater chance there is that some type of harmful debris will reach the inner workings, which can cause damage.
In addition to a visual inspection once every week or two, wipe down the exterior of the unit with a damp cloth. And if you spot any dirt or debris that could clog the unit, carefully remove it.
2. Clean the Air Filters
This is a bit more detailed than cleaning the outside unit, but it’s critical to efficient and long-term operation.
After turning your unit off, carefully remove the air filters.
Tip: when doing this the first time, make special note of how they’re removed. This makes it much easier to replace them.
With a clean, dry cloth, wipe away dust and debris from the filter. If the filters are dirtier than expected, consider swapping them out for new ones. It’s a good idea to keep a few replacements on hand.
While it’s best to check with your manufacturer on how often to clean the filters, a general rule of thumb pegs this at every four weeks.
3. Inspect the Pipes
Without a clear path from the outdoor unit to your indoor fans, your system won’t work as expected.
Neglecting to inspect your pipes for an extended period of time can result in the build-up of dust, dirt, debris, and all sorts of grime.
Also, over time your pipes can develop leaks, which impacts the ability to function as designed.
Tip: make it a habit to inspect the pipes every time you clean the air filters.
Even though it takes minimal time to properly maintain your ductless mini-split system, a proactive approach should save you money over the long haul.
